By creating an account or otherwise using Chess Labs, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree with any part of these Terms, do not use the service. We may modify these Terms; continued use after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
Chess Labs is a move-entry, study and sharing tool. You enter moves on a board, save them as a study together with variations, comments and metadata, organise studies into collections, import and export PGN, and share a study by link or with a named person. Chess Labs is not a chess server: it does not host live play, pairings, clocks or ratings, and it makes no claim about the strength or correctness of any analysis stored in it.
An account is created the first time you sign in with Google, Apple, or an email address and password. You are responsible for keeping your credentials secure and for everything done under your account. Accounts are personal. Tell us promptly if you believe someone else has gained access to yours.
You keep ownership of everything you enter: moves, variations, comments, titles and metadata. You grant us only the permission needed to store your studies, show them back to you, and deliver them to the people you explicitly share them with. A private study is shown to nobody else; an unlisted or public study is shown to anyone who has its share link, which is your decision to publish.
Use Chess Labs lawfully. You shall not: (a) upload content you have no right to publish; (b) use a shared study to harass, defame or abuse another person; (c) attempt to reach studies, accounts or data that are not yours; (d) interfere with the integrity or performance of the service, including automated scraping that degrades it; (e) transmit malicious code; or (f) use another service's data in breach of that service's own terms when importing games.
Any signed-in user can report a shared study. Reports go to an admin queue. Where a study breaches these Terms we may set it back to private, archive it, or in serious or repeated cases suspend the account behind it. Administrators can view account records and shared studies for moderation and support purposes, and those actions are written to an audit log.
The Chess Labs application — its software, design and interfaces — belongs to its operator and is protected by copyright. Your account grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the service. Chess Labs builds on independently licensed open-source chess libraries, which remain the property of their respective authors and are governed by their own licences. Nothing here transfers ownership of your studies to us.
Chess Labs is provided as-is and as-available, without warranty of any kind. We do not guarantee uninterrupted access, and features may change. To the maximum extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, including lost data or lost work. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded. Export your studies as PGN regularly — that export is your backup.
You may stop using Chess Labs at any time and ask for your account to be closed. We may suspend or close an account that breaches these Terms. Before closing your account, export anything you want to keep: once an account is deleted, the studies attached to it may be permanently removed.
These Terms are governed by the laws applicable where the operator of Chess Labs is established, and any dispute is subject to the courts of that jurisdiction. If a provision is found unenforceable, the rest remains in force. Questions about these Terms go to support@codememory.com.
